To all those who need a hand,

This isn’t my normal kind of post. But as I’ve really been getting into doing some new things at work this week (read: I’ve suddenly gotten really busy), it’s been on my mind. I have a stone that sits on my shelf that reads “work”. They told us “Work is like a Stone” when I got it years ago. I’m reminded of the following comparisons now whenever I see it:

Stones are heavy.

Work can be heavy.

If you throw a stone away, it has consequences.

And if you quit working, it has consequences.

If you carry a stone, you become stronger.

Work makes you stronger.

Stones are not pretty, nor ugly.

Work isn’t always glamorous, nor is it always horrible.

A stone bares no fruit on its own – you need multiple stones to build something worthwhile.

When you work together, you’re going to make something much better than anything you could make alone.

A stone can hurt.

When work slips up, it can be painful.

A stone can support.

Work allows you to support yourself.

Stones are sturdy.

Work provides you with a foundation for life.

Stones are reliable sources of strength.

Through your experiences at work, you will become a stronger, smarter person.

Stones are hard.

Work can be hard.

Stones won’t break apart.

And work is never for nothing.

No matter what you’re going through, whether it’s being caused by work or school or even your aspirations – don’t throw it away without remembering and considering what it provides you. In the long run it might bring you great joy. And just because you may have to work with people who might try to keep you down, it doesn’t mean you have to “go speechless” either. I don’t believe we are faced with trials that we can’t overcome in this life. Rather, I believe we are strong, that you are strong. And I believe your words and actions can withstand storms and overcome great winds and waves.

“I won’t be silenced
Though you wanna see me tremble when you try it
All I know is I won’t go speechless
‘Cause I’ll breathe
When they try to suffocate me
Don’t you underestimate me
‘Cause I know that I won’t go speechless
All I know is I won’t go speechless

Speechless by Naomi Scott in Disney’s “Aladdin

So keep going. Keep trying. Keep doing your best. And know that everything you’re going through right now will make you stronger and stronger and allow you in the future to not only stand at the top of a mountain, but also be able to bring and pull others up with you. When you feel weak, know that you’re not alone. There are others out there who also want to pull you up and help you with your stones. I wanted to share more thoughts with you all this week on a few other topics (cough cough, “Aladdin”, cough cough), but for now, I will let this suffice. Till then, remember you’re amazingly strong, beautiful, and worth every difficult stone to carry in the world.

Much love,
